Kudos to Legislator Wayne Harris (R-Clintondale) for supporting the more than one million dollars in cuts that were proposed by County Administrator Mike Hein.
In an effort to protect the county against rising fuel costs and expected cuts in state aid, the Ulster County Legislature voted to trim more than $1 million from the county budget.
Unfortunately, every Republican except for Legislator Harris voted against the spending cuts. The Republicans voted against the cuts putting partisan politics ahead of the business of the people.
It's good to see that at least one Republican in the legislature is willing to stand up and do the right thing.

Yes, Harris sees the future...it is about the people of Ulster not politics.
Great campaign issue for Democrats in 2009. Republicans refuse to cut budget!!!!!Not one republican offered any cuts or suggestions about the budget of 2007 or 2008. Lets see what they offer for 2009?????? Voters will remenber, its the Legislators who vote the budget up or down.
Good for you Blaber, who says you are not fair and balanced.

To 10:26, a few years ago, the Dems didn't do anything to lower the 49% proposed property tax increase and it didn't hurt them!
Wayne Harris is a great legislator, who's earned respect from both sides of the aisle.
10:26, voters are Americans, and Americans ALWAYS forget! After this season of Denise Rhichards: It's complicated is done, the folks are ready for the next season, forgetting how bad the show was. :)
It's just too bad that the budget cuts don't actually reduce spending by anywhere near $1 million. Eliminating line items which are already going unimplemented is not a budget cut, it's just a paper cut. Cutting out magazine subscriptions doesn't do much for spending, either.
Until the Democrats realize that they have to cut and cut and cut until it hurts so bad, the County Goverment is screaming for mercy, we won't have real relief. Their number one job at this point should be finding and approving major cuts at every single session of the County Legislature. If they adjourn without having made a budget cut, they are not doing their jobs.
We need leaders who are willing to cut because the taxpayers need relief, not people who will only cut when they are afraid they won't have enough money to spend. The needs of the families of Ulster County MUST outweigh the political desires of our elected officials.
