PRIMARY ELECTION RESULTS

CITY OF KINGSTON PRIMARY RACES

Ward 9

Democratic Line
Hayes Clement crushes Mark Halwick to win the Democratic nomination in Ward 9. Clement won by a nearly 3 to 1 margin and will face Republican Deborah Brown in November. Congratulations Hayes!

Ward 8
Conservative Line
Congratulations to Todd Langdon on his HUGE victory over Bob Senor on the Conservative Line.

Ward 1
Republican Line
Congratulations to Andi Turco-Levin on her HUGE victory on the Republican Line.

ULSTER COUNTY PRIMARY RACES

County Court Judge
Independence Line
Don Williams easily fends off Democratic nominee Deborah Schneer. The Independence Line is a good litmus test for the General Election in November. I predict that Don Williams will easily win over Schneer, as long as he keeps the momentum going.

County Leg, District One Republican Line
Congratulations to top vote getter Terry Bernardo for running a hard fought and clean campaign. Look for Bernardo, Sheeley, Briggs and Stoecker to take the Legislative seats in November.

County Leg, District Five

Independence Line

The jury is still out in the Independence Line in District Five. Look for the endorsed candidates to win though. I bet those candidates that didn't send letters to the absentee voters are wishing that they did now.

County Leg, District Six Democratic Line
Congratulations to Mike Madsen and Jeanette Provenzano on a closely contested election for the Democratic Line. In the end Frank Dart was not the winner. While we have been very critical of Frank Dart in recent weeks, the election is over now and the voters have spoken. We would like to thank Frank Dart for his many years of service and contributions to the City of Kingston and the County of Ulster.

County Leg, District Seven
Independence Line
Top vote getters are Lomita, Petit and Pitcock, but absentees remain to be counted Terpening and Befiglio could still be in the race after the absentees are counted. Ditto on the absentee letters. I hope all the candidates were on top of them. It really is Campaign Strategy 101, you have to send the absentee voters a letter and ask for their vote.

County Leg, District Eight
Republican, Conservative and Independence Lines
Congratulations to Ken Ronk (TOP vote getter in Leg Dist 8), Cathy Terrizzi and Jack Hayes. Virtually no one in Ulster County thought that these three candidates could prevail over Noonan in all three primaries. Through hard work and dedicated campaigning they did win all three primaries with solid majorities. Thanks to Glenn Noonan for his many years of service to Ulster County.

coming tomorrow

Comptroller Auerbach is looking to hire new staff to properly look over the county's finances and make sure every dollar and cent is accounted for... After the Dean Palen fiasco, the Jail fiasco and the most recent issues with DSS, its a no brainer.

As my father would if you're not going to do something right, don't do it all. We need the chief auditor of Ulster Counter to have the staff needed to do the job he was elected to do.

Tomorrow we will detail how the former county administrator and the charter committee, short staffed the Comptroller's office and what needs to be done to correct it.

We will also go into detail about how these positions will pay for themselves in the long run.

If you spend 300k on staff and they save taxpayers a million dollars by weeding out wasteful spending is it worth it?!?!

A full report tomorrow night!

RIP Kathy Janeczek

I am saddened to report the passing of our City of Kingston Clerk, Kathy Janeczek. She will be missed.

Bernardo's First Blunder

Nina Postupack.

Len Bernardo's first blunder as chair of the Independence party has to be trusting and endorsing Nina Postupack!

REWIND: Nina claims she was under no obligation to support Len when he ran for Executive because he was an independent not a Republican.

Well, if she didn't value Len as an Independence party candidate, than, why did she seek the line in her race.

Gilda Riccardi clearly is the more qualified candidate and had more respect for the Independence chair and the platform of their party.

Proof of that us what took place at Rotary park in Kingston on Sunday.

We hear Len and his dog Sunday attended Nina's event, and the co chair of team Nina, Beth Hanigan was quoted as saying how much she dislikes Len Bernardo.

Really...Nina??

It's unfortunate that Ms. Postupack used Len to get the Independence line because she couldn't care less about it's Chair or the values the party represents.

Aborn DA rival, Cy Vance, Under Heat for backing anti Abortion, Pro Gun candidate

Manhattan district attorney candidate Cy Vance Jr. - who lived in Seattle for 16 years - donated money to a Republican there who fought against gun control.

An examination of Vance's time in Seattle showed he gave $1,000 in 1998 to Christopher Bayley, a GOP Senate candidate who attacked the incumbent Democrat for supporting mandatory trigger locks and a ban on semiautomatic firearms.

Bayley, a former prosecutor in the Seattle area, sent gun owners across the state literature backing a proposal to let visitors to Washington state carry a concealed pistol if they had an out-of-state license.

Bayley also opposed abortion rights and supported a measure that would roll back state affirmative action programs.

Richard Aborn, one of Vance's opponents in the Democratic primary, jumped on Vance's support of Bayley, calling it wrongheaded.

"Manhattan residents can be assured that anti-choice, anti-gun control, anti-affirmative action zealots running for office will never have my support," Aborn said.

"We are significantly better off with the Democrat having won that election, and Mr. Vance and I simply have an honest disagreement about that," Aborn said.

Vance defended his support for Bayley as "appropriate." He called him a "very well-regarded" lawyer.

"If you look at my giving record, I think you will find that I am an active and repeat, almost recidivist, donor to Democratic candidates around the country," Vance said.

Aides said Bayley is the only Republican to ever received Vance's support. He has supported a slew of Democrats, including President Obama.

Vance, who is counting on Manhattan's liberal-leaning Democrats who typically vote in the primary to support him, moved to Seattle in 1988 to build a name for himself outside the shadow of his famous dad.

His father, Cy Vance Sr., was secretary of state in the Carter administration.

The winner of the Democratic primary on Sept. 15 is likely to win November's general election to replace longtime DA Robert Morgenthau.

Blaber News Endorses Richard Aborn for Manhattan District Attorney

PRIMARY SEPTEMBER 15TH

As Manhattan DA, Richard will enact progressive crime-fighting policies that keep our city safe — while building hope in every community. We have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to transform the way we fight crime, by using proven prevention methods. Richard Aborn will seize that opportunity.

Violent Crime

Today, New York enjoys the lowest levels of crime seen in decades. This has been achieved through a variety of means. But, we cannot take it for granted that crime levels will remain at these historic lows. We must constantly rededicate ourselves to fighting violent crime by moving swiftly and vigorously to incarcerate those that commit violent acts against our community. The message to violent criminals must be crystal clear: when you commit a violent act you will be arrested, tried, and when convicted, sent to prison.
Modernizing the Office

The next District Attorney of Manhattan has a unique opportunity to modernize the office and accelerate the use of technology as a tool to not only prosecute offenders, but to prevent crime from occurring in the first place. Technology can also be used to increase efficiencies in the office and save taxpayers money. I will conduct a bottom-to-top review of the office, implement a new program - PreventStat - to track which programs work and implement a paperless office.
PreventStat: Building a Modern District Attorney's Office

Drug Law Reform

It's time to stop ruining young people's lives because of a single mistake. It's time to repeal the Rockefeller Drug Laws and replace them with a sensible policy grounded in public health and common sense. Drug kingpins deserve prison. First and second-time non-violent offenders deserve an opportunity to rebuild their lives. And the families of offenders unfairly caught up in the draconian Rockefeller laws deserve to be reunited.

Domestic Violence

All domestic violence cases that come before the DA's office should be vigorously investigated. The DAs office should also vigorously respond to violations of "restraining orders." In addition, victims of domestic violence and their children should be linked to existing treatment programs, as well as programs that provide housing and jobs, so they can break the cycle of violence. Active partnerships with domestic violence organizations and local community organizations can help encourage people who do not necessarily trust the criminal justice system to come forward to report these terrible crimes.

Juvinial Crime

No matter how limited budgets must be, we cannot abandon our kids. Juvenile justice is a complex area but one where there is much learning taking place and we must dedicate ourselves to developing programs and policies that will help us to steer kids away from crime, before it becomes too late. The DA is in a unique position to give kids a chance; to give them a chance by intervening when they are young in order to eliminate the need to incarcerate them when they are older. Working cooperatively with other agencies, the DA's office can have a positive impact on kids lives - before it is too late.
Before It's Too Late: A New Strategy for Preventing Juvenile Crime

LGBT Rights

Equality of treatment, based on mutual respect, is the bedrock foundation upon which any free society must be built. Until we are all equal, none of us are equal. The LGBT community needs a strong voice and direct representation in the DA's office. We must use New York's Hate Crime laws to fully protect members of the LGBT community who are signaled out for bias crimes, and make sure that vulnerable gay youths and others have a Safe Harbor where they can seek protection of the law. And just as racial profiling by law enforcement is wrong, so is profiling based on sexual orientation.

White Collar Crime

Manhattan sits at the epicenter of the world financial markets and as a result, crimes that undermine the integrity of the financial markets can have a disproportionate and significant impact on New York and New Yorkers. But white collar crime does not begin and end on Wall Street. Scams against the elderly, immigrant groups and others that prey on the most vulnerable will not be tolerated and will receive a swift response.

Terrorism

We must not let ourselves be lulled into a false sense of security that because New York has not been attacked since 9/11 that we are safe. Safety does not flow from the passage of time, but from the constant, creative, cooperative and consistent use of law enforcement strategies and resources. The DA's office must be an active and integral participant in the fight against terrorism. Working cooperatively with other agencies, the DA must leverage advanced technology to look for anomalies, connect the dots and move quickly when necessary to stop terrorists before they act. We need a dedicated Counter-Terrorism Bureau — staffed not only by assistant district attorneys, but also by experienced analysts, researchers and investigators. This Bureau must develop close and cooperative liaisons with other law enforcement agencies. In addition, to be truly effective, all assistant district attorneys and investigative staff must be trained in how to spot anomalies in cases that warrant further investigation. The early detection and disruption of preparatory steps by terrorists can be an important way to stop terrorist activity in its tracks.

Wrongful Convictions

Clearly, nobody is served by wrongful convictions. While prosecutors strive every day to convict the guilty and protect the innocent, errors still occur. My District Attorney's office will provide every prosecutor with more tools and training to minimize wrongful convictions, and Assistant DAs will be encouraged to come forward if they think they have the wrong person. Every case will start with the question – do I have the right person? All cases of prosecutorial misconduct (which, although rare, are incredibly serious) will be investigated quickly and fully.
A New Strategy for Preventing Wrongful Convictions

Community Partnerships

Creating an effective, trusted partnership between the DA's office and the community is a critical crime-fighting tool. We will have a two part strategy designed to create a close working partnership between the DA's office and the community: First, we must not only create close working relationships with the community, but we must also work with trusted community groups to create safe harbors to protect those who are afraid to seek the protection of the law. We can never allow anyone to be beyond the protection of the law: battered women, immigrants, members of the LGBT community, youth, the elderly and others, will all need the protection of the law at one time or another, but for many different reasons be reluctant to contact law enforcement. The DA's office can overcome that reluctance by working closely with trusted community-based organizations so that those who need protection have a place to go where they will feel -- and be -- safe and secure. Second, it is essential for the DA's office to recognize that different communities and different individuals have different crime prevention needs.

Transportation Safety

Almost everyone in New York knows that the homicide rate in New York, thanks to effective policing and prosecution, has declined to around 500 homicides a year from a peak of more than 2200 homicides in 1990. And yet few people know that, shockingly, the traffic fatality rate in New York is almost as high -almost 300 lost lives a year. As District Attorney, I commit to dedicating appropriate resources to ensure that traffic fatalities become as rare as bike lanes used to be.

Gun Control

We must build on the success that has been achieved by expanding on proven interventions against illegal guns. Over 90 percent of illegal guns in New York have been brought in from other areas. Unlike politics, gun crime is not local. We must accept the fact that a regional, interstate approach to gun trafficking is required and set about to build that network. We must also share data with other prosecutors throughout the five boroughs of NYC as well as the surrounding region in order to cast a wide net over gun trafficking - and stop the guns from ever reaching Manhattan. We must also have a strong and clear voice on national and state legislation that is designed to fight illegal gun trafficking.
Aborn Unveils Five-Point Plan to Combat Gun Violence in Manhattan

Capital Punishment

Capital punishment is contrary to our values as New Yorkers. It is immoral and it is wrong. I have always opposed capital punishment, and will lead the effort against any attempt to revive it in New York.

Technology

Technology is an essential and integral weapon in fighting crime and keeping the public safe. Technology can - and should - be used to extend the reach and effectiveness of police department, criminal justice departments and the DA's office. In a time of diminished resources, increased use of technology can build greater efficiencies in administrative operations while also greatly aiding the fight against crime. One of the enduring lessons of 9/11 is that we must "connect the dots," and not just for terrorism cases. Advanced technology is a core component of doing so.

Really Noble?

I can't believe all this news coverage about a traffic light.

The common council was one vote shy of getting the traffic light back uptown and getting rid of the stop sign that has been there all of 10 minutes.

Council Prez, Jim Noble broke the tie vote siding to send it back to committee.

Really, Jimmy? I love you to death but you couldn't help DiBella out on this one? She is retiring has NO reason to play politcs with this legislation, she is clearly doing it in the best interests of the residents. Not to mention, it's always been a light, so when the engineers did their original study, they clearly thought it should be a blinking light and not a stop sign.

I'm just saying, DiBella has been a loyal solider, has defended your running mate on several occasions, you should of sided with her on this one.

Here and There

***UPDATE***

In response to Rich Cahill's dog whistling campaign, against Alderman Hoffay;

I’ve often been asked why I chose to leave the priesthood and it is a difficult thing to explain. First let me state that it was my choice and mine alone. Even five years later I was asked to reconsider and return. As happy and rewarding as school had been, even the seminary had its good moments, I was not prepared to live the life of a priest. I know that now, at the time all I knew was that I was increasingly unhappy. There are personal rewards for being involved in the lives of so many people, whether in a parish or school, but at the core there must be a strong center of personal belief and happiness or at least serenity. Mine was challenged in ways I was not prepared for.

My parents both died in December of 1979, after five years of suffering and pain. It was the great test of family and faith. I was away and alone and unforgiving for their suffering. At the same time there was a strike of the lay faculty association at the school and my sympathies were with the lay teachers and not the Archdiocese. With divided loyalties and personal tragedy, the situation was untenable and I decided to leave. I do not regret that decision.

A greater challenge was the personal acceptance of who I was, a decision I easily put off for years in the seminary and clergy. Slowly and with difficulty I came to accept that I was gay, would not marry and raise a family as my siblings had done. My family’s reaction to all this tumult in my life was the same, steady, love and acceptance I have always found there.

My active participation in a recovery program has helped me to accept who I am, find the serenity that I have always looked for in my life and take life one day at a time. This is the strong foundation that also allows me to contribute my talents and gifts in public and political life.

Politics:

I did find that clergy life had unexpectedly prepared me for politics, perhaps it was a keener appreciation of human nature or an increased sense of institutional dynamics. Shortly after returning to Kingston in 1982, I joined the City Democratic Committee, becoming the Chair, then the Ulster County Democratic Committee Chair in 1990. I found I really liked the political life and had some success working on campaigns I believed in, including Bill Clinton’s Presidential campaign, Maurice Hinchey’s Congressional campaign, Kevin Cahill’s Assembly campaign, Judge Karen Peter’s Supreme Court campaign and Judge Mary Work’s campaign for Family Court.

I served as County Chair for nine years and worked on numerous campaigns and issues. My love for Kingston found a perfect expression in Mayor TR Gallo’s campaigns and I served on various boards as part of his administration, including the Kingston Housing Authority and the Kingston Local Development Corporation. I also met an impressive young attorney from New York, Eliot Spitzer, worked on his campaign and then spent eight years working in the Attorney General’s Office.

My relationship with the Kingston Common Council started during my time as City Chair. I was fascinated by the interplay of personality, issue and institution and regularly attended the Council caucuses and meetings. Later on I discovered that one of my grandmother’s uncles had served on the Council and I was hooked. The Council position is unusual as there is an informal administrative relationship between the Alderman and the Ward as well as a more formal legislative role, more hands on than the County Legislature, for example. I can honestly say this is the only elected position I have ever really wanted, in-spite of my long association with the elective process.

After years away, my life has come full circle, returning to the Kingston I always loved and doing a job I prepared for through life experience more than education. Hopefully there are a few more chapters to come in this bio and I can make the case that the people of Ward Two are well served by my representation on the Common Council.

Enough is Enough-

The attacks on Alderman Cahill's blog against Second Ward Alderman Tom Hoffay are unacceptable and disgusting and enough is enough.

Tom Hoffay is a man of integrity and great moral character, he lead my party with distinction for 10 years and is a leader in this community, working under Attorney General and Governor Eliot Spitzer, a former Chair of the Kingston Housing Authority he is someone that I admire.

For Rich Cahill to allow, and I'll say it because we all know its true, to write those comments on his blog talking about Tom in the manner that he did is just disgraceful.

I publicly am calling upon Rich Cahill to delete those comments and apoligize.

Furthermore, the comments about Jenifer Fuentes not being from the area are laughable at best, maybe people forget Jen Ringwood, who came from Long Island and served Ward 2 very well.

The fact of the matter is Mrs. Fuentes, chose Kingston to be her home and has lived in the Ward for many years and is raising her family here. And, anyone that knows Jen, knows she is civic minded and will be a great Alderman and stand up for the residents of Ward 5.

County Executive Mike Hein is holding a fundraiser, tickets range from $ 100- $1000 and a portion of the fundraiser will benifit Our Democratic candidates Debra Schneer and Gilda Riccardi. More details to follow....

Alderman Anne Marie DiBella is retiring at the end of the year and I think it would be nice if the City Of Kingston Democratic committee would host a dinner in her honor, recognizing the hard work and achievements she was able to accomplish under her tenure as Alderman in Ward 5.

Julian Schriebman, chair of the UC Democratic committee wrote a letter in this weeks Kingston Times that was very on point in regards to the race for UC Court Judge and I think it behooves everyone to take a look.

Our sources in Ulster say an independent poll conducted, show incumbent Supervisor Nick Woerner trailing challenger Jim Quigley's by 8 points. It's early so who knows if that number will hold.

Rochester town board member Manuela, did not resign her office despite swearing under oath that she is a resident of Queens County.

Another funny tid bit, Manuela has claimed she is the victim of an attack launched by Len and Terry Bernardo in an effort to keep her off the ballot.

Fact of the matter is, it was Manuela who (unsuccessfully) challenged and tried to throw Terry Bernardo off the ballot during the petition process. Terry, nor anyone else challenged or tried to knock Manuela off the ballot, there will be a primary in September and may the best person (Terry Bernardo) win. :~)

Rumor has it we may see a very young legislator as Minority leader in the County Legislature next year....we will see.

Petition Drama

Interesting week, a lot of things are going on locally now that petitions have been filed.

Here is what we hear:

Andi Turco Levin, Republican candidate in Ward 1, failed to file enough petitions to secure the Republican nomination for Ward 1. This is just pathetic, 19 were needed and only 14 were turned in.

Andi's opponent by contrast turned in over 90. We like Andy and think she would be a great Alderman but you have to want the job.

It's very disappointing to see that Andi could not get 20 signatures to get herself on the ballot.

The next stop for Andi will be a GOP OTB, no names will appear on the ballot and anyone can write anyone's name in. There is no love lose between Andi and Al Teetsil. Could we see Al try and take the line or could he have his friends write in Andi's opponent's name?

A once sure thing for Andi has now become interesting.

Looks like Richard Cahill Sr., will not have the Independence line, Cahill is looking at having 3 signatures. Knocked out for lack of a date on the signature..making him short the required number of signatures.

Jen Fuentas has also had her Working Families Party petitions challenged but we are told the petitions are valid and will stand at the end of the day.

Ms. Fuentas is inching closer to becoming the first registered member of the Working Families Party to be elected to the Kingston Common Council. Vegas odds have her at about 90%

Speaking of Ward 5, two time unsuccessful candidate for Alderman, Jean Jacobs is taking another stab at it. Jean has filed paperwork to run against Cahill Sr. In the GOP primary, if she is successful we could see a three way race in that Ward, Cahill Sr. Has the Conservative endorsement.

Jean Jacobs also has filed petitions to run for County Legislator in District 12 ...whether or not she can run for both offices at the same time is being researched.

Nina Postupack came within an eyelash of not having the Independence line after Independence Chairman Len Bernardo had to hold it hostage to get Mario Catalano and his committee to sign the Wilson Pakula for the three Dems and all the Conservative Party candidates that had been endorsed by the GOP at their convention last month.

Apparently, Catalano "forgot to sign" the Wilson and was MIA during today's deadline.

After a heated exchange with Tom Turko, Len got the GOP to hold up their end of the bargin .....the GOP caved in kicking and screaming to save Nina Postupack's Indy line.

Speaking of the Independence Party : Debra Schneer has filed enough petitions to force a primary for the line against Don Williams. Debra has a strong committee and is now the sitting County Court Judge... She has a good shot.

I firmly believe whomever wins the Independence party primary will win the November election.

Its not even August yet, this is going to be an explosive election year.

Cahill Fundraiser Huge Success

Brian Cahill's fundraiser was a huge success, drawing close to 100 people including former Majority Leader of the NYS Senate Joe Bruno. I guess one Majority Leader supporting another.

It was fun to meet and talk with Bruno, I said to him, Mr. Majority Leader the entire Senate fell apart with in a year of you leaving and he said that it is something that worries him.

I also was very impresed with County Court candidate Debra Schneer, a very bright town Justice; who I think will make a great County Court Judge.

Just a note: Senator Bruno's attendance at the SkyTop last night was just a coincidence, he was not there for Brian's fundraiser.

A Few Observations

Sorry the blog has not been updated as much, it's been a busy hectic week.

CHECK OUR NEW POLL FOR COUNTY COURT

A Few Observations:

Sorry to see Kingston Truth, another local blog, shut down, I enjoyed reading the blog and it was one of the few "pro Blaber" blogs in Ulster County. Hope it makes a come back.

Gilda Riccardi, is out beating bushes, I had a great conversation with some people who got to meet her last week for the first time and they were very impressed with her. I am happy she is out there working and look forward to campaigning for her in the coming months.

Mike Madsen says he has been out getting signatures and getting a great response from voters. Keep up the good work, Mike! Jeanette Provanzano is also out working hard.....where is Frank Dart these days? We hear vacationing it up in Florida.

Dean Palen in some hot water in the last few days. After, him and his wife were escorted off the property last week, 31k in uncased checks dating back from 2000 were found in a safe behind his wife's desk. While it may not have been criminal, it certainly showed that Palen was incompetent. And, lets be honest people were sick of the Palen/Palen show going on at the UC Health Department for the last 20 years. Expect a thorough and detailed audit to come out of Comptroller Auerbach's office in the coming weeks.

Speaking of Palen, my friend and the Political Dean of Ulster Politics Hugh Reynolds, must be kicking himself for the column he wrote defending Palen and attacking Mike Hein for ousting him...if only he had waited a few days.......

Debrah Schneer, the Democratic nominee for County Court was appointed by Governor David Paterson to fill Judge Bruhn's seat a few days ago. With the mess going on in Albany (which ironically, sort of reminds me of the mess that went on at the UC Democratic convention) it is doubtful Schneer will get Senate approval to take her post any time soon.

Nina Postupack came out and publicly endorsed Jim Quigley to be the next Supervisor of the town of Ulster. I am a little surprised by this and it may have current Supervisor Nicky Woerner scratching his head...is his support from the Spada crowd dwindling? Will he now do the right thing and support Gilda Riccardi for Clerk?

Comptroller Auerbach Always the Entertainer

Here and There

Mike Madsen has decided to run for County Legislature instead of running a Ward 9 primary. I asked him to reconsider but he is all about it and that's democracy. Obviously, I am supporting him and hope he wins the primary. I think it's also important that Dems in that district pull down the lever for Jeanette Provanzano as well.

As for Ward 9, I am supporting the highly qualified Hayes Clement to be Mike's successor. Hayes has what it takes and will be the next Alderman of Ward nine.

While I was bitter, and ignored covering the county court Judge race after the convention, I would like to Congratulate Debra Schneer on her victory at last weeks convention. Our chairman really did a poor job throughout the county court selection process and Terry Rosenbloom should be ashamed of herself and expect a primary in her next bid for office.(apparently, I'm still bitter) Nonetheless Ms. Schneer is the Dem nominee and I congratulate her.

Also congratulations to Judge Katz, who was the Governor's pick and would of been a great County Court Judge. Judge Katz has decided not to primary and do what is best for the party like a true Democrat. I repect that but have a feeling with Katz out of the race, the group Dems for Don Williams will keep growing.

Town of Ulster Dems had a big pick up with Lew Kirshner running for town justice but it was short lived and his departure from the race overshadowed the entire Dem ticket. It's going to be an uphill battle for Dems in the town of Ulster.

LEW KIRSHNER TO RUN FOR ULSTER TOWN JUSTICE

Former County Treasurer Lew Kirshner was nominated today to run for Town Justice in the town of Ulster.
This will be a race to watch, Sue Kesick has proven to be a strong candidate by beating her former boss to win the Judgeship but Lew Kirshner is an establishment all by himself.

Also nominated: Nick Worener for Supervisor, Craig Artist and Rocky Secreto for town board.

The GOP convention will take place next week with JIM QUIGLEY runnin for Supervisor, John Morrow and Chris Hedrick for town board

Gilda Riccardi

One positive thing that came out of tonight's convention was the unanimous nomination of our next county clerk Gilda Riccardi.

Madsen Loses Dem Nod, Vowes Primary

The good news about Halwick winning the Democratic nomination tonight is it will give me an excuse to spend a lot of time in Kingston this summer working to get my boy Mike Madsen elected Alderman of the 9th ward. Madsen who has the Independence line will primary for the Democratic line and I am confident that he will be successful in a Democratic primary this September. I congratulate Mr. Halwick of getting party insiders to support his candidacy but now lets let the people of Ward 9 decide! Majority Leader Bill Reynolds also vowed to support Alderman Madsen in his reelection bid!

I also would like to congratulate Jen Fuentas, a registered member of the Working Families Party, who received the Democratic endorsement to run in Ward 5. It looks like we will have a registered member of the WFP serving on the council for the first time in Kingston's history and we need to work hard to elect her.

Tom Hoffay also won handily over John Hoyt by a 6-1 margin!!!! Way to go Tom!

ALSO A VERY SPECIAL CONGRATULATIONS TO COUNTY LEGISLATOR ELECT TERRY BERNARDO

Two Democrats join Republicans to topple Smith as Senate leader Democrat Espada elected Senate president

ALBANY -- In a dramatic late afternoon overthrow of the Senate leadership, Senate Republicans joined by two dissident Democrats took control of the upper chamber and installed Sen. Pedro Espada as president.

The Bronx lawmaker, who returned to Albany in January after a hiatus, said he is a voice for reform Democrats and that more reformers will be joining his lead. He and Sen. Hiram Monserrate of Queens joined the 30 Senate Republicans to remove all leadership put into place at the start of year when Sen. Malcolm Smith became the majority leader.

Led by an aggressive push by Sen. Thomas Libous, R-Binghamton, Republicans forced a resolution that resulted in the vote of Espada as temporary president for the rest of this year and of Sen. Dean Skelos, R-Rockville Centre as the vice president.

The Capitol was turned upside down by the move which ends the Democrats six-month tenure as leaders of the Senate.

"I am a Democrat and I am in charge," said Espada who said he could not sit tight and allow Smith to lead the Senate. "We have been in a quagmire since Jan 7."

The plot to overthrow Smith was supported by Rochester billionaire Thomas Golisano, a three-time gubernatorial candidate and backer of several Senate candidates.

Libous was able to install Sen. George Winner, R-Elmira, to oversee the proceedings. He replaced Sen. Neil Breslin, D-Bethlehem, who had been officiating the Senate when Libous raised his surprise leadership resolution. Breslin was taken aback and had a hard time responding to the hand vote of 32 senators calling for a leadership change.

Eventually, Breslin recognized the vote and left with lawyer Keith St. John so that Republican lawyer Jack Casey and Winner could take the stage. After Espada and Skelos were sworn in, Libous won another resolution to restructure the powerful Rules Committee and cancel all chairmanships and committee appointments.

"Legally, we're absolutely assured," Espada said. "This is about getting a government that works."

Clearly shaken, Democrats left the chamber after the leadership vote, although they first attempted to adjourn. That vote was rejected by Republicans and Espada's allies. As the new leadership began their actions, the lights were turned off in the chamber. They were put back on five minutes later.

Republican aides who had been shoved into the minority seemed buoyed by the turn of events as Democrats seemed unsure of what to do next.

Tomorrow We Make History

ALERT: Jonathan Katz endorsed by the Working Families Party

Tomorrow is the night of Gilda Riccardi, an experienced professional, former Prosecutor and mother making he announcement in front of 300 plus Democrats that she will step up to the plate and be a candidate for Ulster County Clerk.

We as Democrats should be proud that someone of Ms.Riccardi's caliber has stepped up to run and take back the office of the Ulster County Clerk for the first time in our County's history.

Ms. Riccardi was well received at the Independence fundraiser last week, I have heard from both Democrats and Republicans that Gilda was very impressive and said no doubt that her opponent looked nervous.

While I have a commitment in NYC that will prevent me from attending my party's convention, I will be there in spirit, and thanks to Ms.Riccardi, I am once again proud to be an Ulster County Democrat!

Of course as talked about previously, we will be nominating a candidate for Ulster County Clerk, I STRONGLY SUPPORT Jonathan Katz, to be our party's nominee and am happy that he has already received the support of the Working Families Party, could another third party endorsement follow for Justice Katz?!?!

There should not be much surprises in the county leg races, hopefully by the end of tomorrow night, I will be able to call and congratulate my friend, County Legislator elect Terry Bernardo. The other race to watch is to see if Tracy Bartels makes a come back and does Noonan get the Dem line? District 8 could prove interesting.

This Just In : Jon Katz Gets WFP Nod

Congratulations to Jonathan Katz who has received the endorsement of the Working Families Party!!!

Why we need Katz

I just got off the phone with Independence Chair Len Bernardo who was marching in the New Paltz pride parade with our next county court Judge Jonathan Katz.

The significance in this is we finally have a clear choice to make electing Mr.Williams and his philosophize or Judge Katz.

We know where both of them stand on the issue of marriage equality, Mr. Williams is against it and threatened to prosecute Mayor West for giving same sex couples the equal rights that they deserve. We all know Justice Katz was also a part of that debate as a New Paltz town Judge, he stood on the right side of the issue.

Ulster County has been run by Republican jurists with their simple minded thinking for too long. We have an opertunity to elect a true Progressive Judge to the bench.

Obviously, marriage equality is an important issue but there are many others such as electing a Judge that believes in strong alternative to incarceration programs for non violent offenders, getting individuals with substance abuse problems the treatment they need, not locking them up for three years so they come out full blooded criminals.

I am not advocating for a Judge to legislate from the bench or to be 'weak on crume' as the Conservatives will try to use as a scare tactic. I am simply saying the county Judge has discretion on sentencing and we need to someone that is willing to use it.

Judge Katz will be a breath of fresh air to the criminal justice system here in Ulster County and will help bring us into the 21st century.

City Dems Once Again Eat Thier Own

In 2007 we were all but assured a victory when Dems nominated Jonathan Sennett to be our DA nominee but due to infighting and a three way race we all know what happened.

As they say if you don't learn from history you are doomed to repeat it and it looks like the same people that didn't get it in 07 don't get it in 09.

It was reported in the Kingston Times that John Hoyt and Debbie Brown both candidates nominated by the GOP party are looking to take out incumbent Dems, with the help of certain members of the city committee.

Ed Palifino, the vice chair of the Dem committee actually is publicly telling people he will nominate Hoyt over incumbant Tom Hoffay. Knowing full well that Hoyt will be cross endorsed..... WTF?!?!

Tom Hoffay is a life long Democrat, a former chairman of the County party who just retired after years of service to former Gov and former AG Eliot Spitzer. Not to mention a very effective Alderman, its disgraceful.

Maybe Ed Palidino, a former Republican, is back working for the other side, either way he should resign as Vice Chair of the committee, no way he can continue to serve effectively.

The GOP did not exactly put out a strong ticket on Monday, if we are united we can make 8-1 or 9-0 again.

We need to nominate and support the current caucus of Tom Hoffay, Charles Landi, Shirley Whitlock, Bill Reynolds and Robert Senor.

As well as support newcomers Jen Fuentas in 5 who will be a strong voice as a mother and active member of her community; and Eliza Ball in ward 6 who also is extremely qualified and active in her community.

In the words of my mentor Jon Sennett at the da pre convention debate in rosendale, cuz the words still ring true today : Lets not blow this opertunity as Democrats, lets out our best foot forward and bring forth a candidate(s) that's going to win in November.

Now is the time, my friends to put all of our differences aside and unite as a party. If we do that we will take back the offices of the county court and clerk respectively for the first time in living memory, and strengthen our majority on the county. And city legislature.

BREAKING NEWS

Gilda Riccardi will be a candidate for Ulster County Clerk!

I have it on good sources that Ms. Riccardi will be a candidate for UC Clerk.

Gilda is extremely qualified and will bring home a victory for the Democrats...her coat tails also will be long and will strengthen our majority in the legislature.

More later but I can't wait for this race and for people to meet Gilda, a candidate that can best be discribed as the REAL DEAL!

Here and There

The race for Kingston City Council races are heatin' up!

In Ward 1, Andi Turco Levin will be a candidate for the Republican nomination and I hear she has strong support from Independence Chair Len Bernardo. Al Teetsil may not even have enough votes to win his party's nomination.

There is a likely primary between Cahill Sr., and Jean Jacobs the winner going against Alderwoman DiBella in the general. There are rumors of Anne Marie not running, as a Democrat that wants the ward to remain Democratic I hope Anne Marie does seek reelection.

Jeanne Edwards has declared she will be a candidate in the 4th Ward against Incumbent Democrat Shirley Whitlock. While I like Mrs. Edwards her motivation for running is wrong, Shirley fought hard to keep Jeanne her job several months ago and is a damn good Alderman. I strongly support Alderwoman Whitlock's reelection bid!

Mike Madsen also will be involved with a four way primary as previously reported, all are politcal nobody's and will be handily defeated by Mike.

GILDA GILDA GILDA GIlDA! Get used to hearing the name of Gilda Riccardi who I hear is a heartbeat away from a run for county clerk. If Gilda runs, make no mistake about it she will be the next county clerk. Albert's money, influence and threats will not be enough to overcome Ms.Riccardi's charm, dedicated campaigning and QUALIFICATIONS!

Jon Katz is getting a lot of support in his bid for county court and could be days away from an appointment by Governor Patterson, despite the pushing by Stuart Fraiser to put in his hand picked candidate Debra Schneer.

vote today

Please vote in the Kingston School Board election today. There are two great candidates running, Jim Shaughnessy and Chris Farrell, both deserve your vote.

In the New Paltz school board race Dan Torres and K.T. Flusser are both superior candidates and they also will do a great job on the board.

I know times are tough but the budgets that have been put together in both the Kingston and New Paltz districts are ones that are sound and responsible, I urge people to VOTE YES on the budget.

Sexual Harassment at UC Jail

So we all saw NBC news last night and read the Freeman headlines about the Federal lawsuit that has been filed in Ulster County, involving female correction officers at the jail.

I think obviously the allegations are serious and need to be handled as such. While other blogs have attacked County Exec Mike Hein for failing to talk to the press yesterday, hour did the right thing, as county executive, Mike should not be talking to the press about an ongoing legal matter.

However, Mike Hein and Sheriff Paul Van Blarcum need to handle this swiftly and send a message that Ulster County takes these matters seriously and its not something that will be tolerated.

Sheriff Van Blarcum specificly needs to do this and show to everyone that he is in charge of his department and quickly restore public confidence.

From my personal experience with the Sheriff, I know him to be a straight shooter and a public servant dedicated to his job, I am more than confident in his ability moving forward.

comments now 3rd Party

I NO LONGER CONTROL COMMENT MODERATION! It is now done 3rd party and automatically is posted in real time. I am not reading the comments and want nothing to do with them. I have gotten phone calls already and I ask people again to be respectful and not to ruin comments for other people. I think you can get your message out there without using profanity.

I also accept no responsibility for the comments written and I warn those that are easily offended to follow my lead and not read them.

GILDA RICCARDI: THE REAL DEAL

It looks like Jonathan Katz is emerging as the clear front rubber for county court, a real legal mind that can change the justice system in Ulster County for the better...we are also happy to see Jim Gilpatric looking good in his bid for State Supreme court.

On the County Clerk front it looks like Gilda Riccardi may take the plunge and we couldn't be more happy for her. There is one phrase to describe Gilda: THE REAL DEAL!
A former NYC prosecutor and curent law clerk, Gilda brings with her the credentials and personality to win the office of County Clerk for the Democrats for the first time ever in Ulster County.

The race for Ulster Supervisor is about to heat up with Likely challenger Jim Quigley taking on Ulster Supervisor Nick Worener, Nick is seeking a third term. Quigley carried Ulster in his bid for Comptroller by a higher margin than any other candidate including Barak Obama but Worener has won the heavily Republican town twice, so expect this race to be the most watched local race in Ulster County...as I said before I am glad to be far away from this blood bath.

The Kingston Common Council races are also shapping up with Al Teetsil in a GOP primary against new comer Andy Levin, who I hear great things about. Ward 2, 3, 4, 7, and 9 will return incumbents. Watch the 8th ward and the 1st.

Did I mention how excited I am about Gilda? With the proper support, I see Ms.Riccardi walking away with a huge victory in November!!!
