Jean Jacobs Announces for County Comptroller

BREAKING NEWS: Jean Jacobs the GOP chair of Kingston announces she will be running for County Comptroller. Ms. Jacobs' candidacy will be over in less than 24 hours, no one will take this seriously. When I was first told, I was in hysterics , Jean is completely out of her league.

The only thing that remotely qualifies Jean to be the County Comptroller was her time as President of the Kingston School Board where she was in charge of a budget of more than 100 million dollars. However, her very short tenure on that board can be summed up in one word : DISASTER! Which is why as the incumbent School Board President she finished dead last in her bid for reelection.

The GOP convention tomorrow will be an embarrassment for Jacobs, Quigley will take over 95% of the vote....no exaggeration. WHAT IS JACOBS THINKING? I have to be honest as a partisan Democrat, I'm hoping Jean is the candidate. Best of luck, Jean!

The following is a letter Jean sent to the GOP Committee:

Dear Fellow Republicans: Date: May 28th, 2008

This letter hereby notifies you that I, Jean C. Jacobs, Republican Chairman in the City of Kingston, am officially running for the Ulster County Comptroller position. I am seeking the endorsement of the Republican, Conservative and Independence Parties. I have been a life-long City of Kingston resident and my family has always been true Republicans. I have raised four wonderful and successful children Robin, Daniel, Jared and Jessica.

I have been a community leader and volunteer for over 35 years. It is with great pride that I believe my professional experience and strength of character will give me the opportunity to fulfill my duties and job responsibilities if elected to this position. I have always created a platform of accountability in all of my accomplishments and I am determined and committed to succeed in this challenge. I am asking for your support and endorsement of the Republican Party in my decision to run for this position.

Among many of my qualifications, I have worked in finances as an Administrator in the Medical Health Care Industry and am a Professional Medical Practice Management Consultant, teaching practice management for over 37 years. During my career, I was the Administrative Finance Director of the Mid-Hudson Family Health Services Institute and I administered and managed numerous Federal and State contracts. I believe in the “Total Quality Management” approach to business management and have governed and managed budgets throughout my professional career.

I personally pledge to you that I will make the commitment and the sacrifices to be elected to this position in November. I believe that good government is based on the individual and that each person’s ability, dignity, freedom and responsibility must be honored and recognized. With your support, together we can make a difference and improve the present leadership and business practices within the County of Ulster.

    Even "Mr. Kingston Republican" Rich Cahill does not support her and she's the city chair. Check out his blog. He's endorsed Quigley in no uncertain terms.

    Not exactly. Board members vote on a budget that is prepared by and developed by the Superintendent and district administration. Actual control and/or involvement in the development of the budget is fairly minimal.

    If anyone ever hears me say that I was "in charge" of any portion of the school district's budget, please call Benedictine Hosptial psych. and have me evaluated.

    Yes, I understand the very little effect that a board member has with the budget. Maybe "oversaw" would have been a better word.

    BTW- Will you be serving on the committee to elect Jacobs for Ulster County Comptroller?

    Editor's Note: Dan Gartenstein, a former board president himself, was one of the candidates that beat Jacobs to win a seat on the board.

    As I have said before, your ambitions for me have always been far higher than my ambitions for myself.
    Still enjoying my retirement from public service.
    As to Jean's campaign for comptroller, the whole episode is just sad and thankfully it will be over before morning.
    BTW, as I recall, the year I was elected to the board my vote total was more than fifteen times Jean's total. She came in dead last out of a field of eleven.
    On some level she deserves credit for standing up after such a defeat (and a number of other defeats thereafter) rather than crawling into a dark hole.

    I must say, Jeremy, that the ignorance and commentary which always seem to grace these blogs in this one horse town are exactly the reason I will be moving....and shortly.

    Even the Lawyers in this town are small minded, petty and speak with ignorant, flaming tongue.

    It is very sad. It is, indeed,a drinking town where everyone huddles around the local watering hole to gossip. This is why your blog,among others, are so popular.

    Having lived in larger, intelligent cities, I must say that it will be heartening to get out of this hole. My stay has been far too long.

    Jean Jacobs is a decent person trying (from what I have seen) to do a decent job. She appears to put 100% into what she does --- and she has an aura of sincerity that is sadly lacking from many. It is sad to see her attacked here (some comments in particular) in such a manner, and sometimes I get the idea that there are quite a few guys that simply have no respect for any woman (there aren't that many locally, and they sure do get slammed...) in the political sphere. I hope this isn't true.

    To refer to a person as a "nut" - a "whackjob" - etc. is abusive. Why don't you spell out what appears to offend you? Has she pilfered funds? Flown off to Hawaii on frivolous trips? Used City money to buy boots --- or get her hair done?

    Has she a good employment record (it would appear so...)? Has she SHOWN UP for her KAPA shows (a volunteer gig) and acted professionally and appropriately - delivering much needed info to the public? Have you ever heard HER call anyone a "nut" or a "whackjob?"

    I'm not a Republican, but respect is due where respect is due - and THAT is EVERYWHERE.

    Mr. Blaber,

    Who are behind these comments? How many people run for public office and lose? When is the last time Kingston had a republican Mayor? How is this sad? How many candidates are waiting in line to run for this position? It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better.

    The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood; who strives valiantly; who errs, who comes short again and again, because there is no effort without error and shortcoming; but who does actually strive to do the deeds; who knows great enthusiasms, the great devotions; who spends himself in a worthy cause; who at the best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement, and who at the worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly, so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who neither know victory nor defeat.

    Take a lesson from Theodore Roosevelt. Strp-up or Shut-up
