Lunch with Reynolds
I got to sit down with Hugh Reynolds at mariner's Harbor for about an hour on Tuesday and we talked about a lot of different things memories from the past and ideas of the future. I expect to see the political dean of the lower Hudson Valley to make a return in some fashion soon. I like many other miss the guy, not so much the column...........

I have to admit that there is something truly wrong with the Freeman for showing Reynolds the door after 40 years of service without some recognition of his contribution to the paper.
After four decades of dedicated work, the guy deserved something.
This is just cold.
Who paid for lunch? I don't miss his column either.
I think there was more to do with this than not being able to afford him. What about loss of readership following his departure. That has to have some impact on the Freeman's bottom line.
12:58 is on to something. Usually, there's more than meets the eye when something like this happens.

The Freeman will never be the same. Hugh's humor, wit,sarcasm and pragmatic style of journalism will hopefully return to a local paper that will cherish his comments.

Hugh should also consider a return to Public Access-
Reynolds could really belt 'em out!
Take for instance, his insightful and brilliant reference to Susan Zimet as "the whirling dervish of the Ulster County Legislature!"
I'm gonna miss that kind of bright wittiness.
Shelly Z is right. The Freeman will never be the same. It will be better without that column.
Are we trying to stifle all objective criticism - Hugh's column was great - only thing keeping government politicos on their toes.
Reynolds played favorites. He used those favorites for information which was many times slanted or even untrue. He was called on it so many times that his column turned into a gossip column. Very little inside stuff that wasn't already making the clubhouse or bar circuit. His best days were behind him for sure. Nice guy and I will miss his column. The Freeman is even more of a rag without him.
He never let the facts get in the way of telling a good story.
There is nothing more to this than a salary dump. The parent company is doing it to papers all over the country. After 30+ years they can hire two inexperienced reporters to fill his salary.

11:56. You've got that right. Lomita and Hein. Hein and Lomita. Throw in Catalano also. I was so tired of reading the same crap over and over in this guy's column. What a breath of fresh air that they got rid of him.
While they may be able to hire two green reporters, they lose institutional knowledge and contacts made over four decades. This is short sighted on the corporate level.
The reality is that they will likely hire more freelancers (less head count) and pay them $75 a story.
They would have been better off dumping the managing editor and assistant managing editor. The paper needs new blood and leadership at the paper.
