Cahill urges PSC not to approve latest Central Hudson rate hike request

Assemblyman Kevin Cahill (D-Kingston), chairman of the Assembly’s Energy Committee, Friday called on the state Public Service Commission not to approve Central Hudson Gas and Electric corporation’s latest rate request.

Cahill said the utility is should be tightening its own belt to keep a lid on costs to consumers.

“I understand that Central Hudson has no control over the cost of the commodities that they deliver, but they sure are in a position to streamline, economize and make due like the rest of us are, with what they have in this economy,” he said. Cahill said he hopes the PSA rejects completely, the Central Hudson rate increase.

Cahill said the utility is looking to “once again clobber ratepayers with the third increase in the last five years.” And he said he doesn’t buy their argument that consumer conservation is, in part, causing the need to raise rates.

These rate hikes are atrocious. Time to look at "Cui Buono", in other words, "who benefits?" As usual the stockholders, CEO, management, and employees. The ratepayers get screwed as usual.
I would really be interested to know how ultimately the Catholic church benefits, ie, how much of those profits wind up in the coffers of the Catholic church, and then, what percentage of that amount per unit of time winds up in Catholic charities, and then as a final study to this study, what percentage of that goes to helping those who cannot afford to pay their electric rates and thus cannot run a refrigerator or microwave or other necessary item in daily living?
It'd take too much time, effort, and cajones for anyone or any journalist to even propose such a study, but it would be an interesting analysis of just how generous a region the Hudson Valley is with these issues were such a thing to be done.

The reason we are as consumers are conserving is that we CANNOT afford the rates increases we have had in the last 3 years so what makes Central Hudson think we can afford these new increases now???? We will try harder to reduce our consumption due to the expensive nature of their services but in doing so we get socked with another rate increase! Where is the logic in that? Let us please get off of this carousel. Central Hudson needs to run their company a little more efficient. How about reducing some of those high salaries they afford their staff? Some of us in the private sector have lost our benefits in addition to reduced salaries and hours. What makes Central Hudson immuned to that course of action?

As to the PSC, what a joke....You are suppose to be looking out for the consumer.Screw the compromise. Just say NO and you will be surprised at how Central Hudson will be forced to adjust to the current economy.

I haven't always been a fan of Cahill but in this case he has my support if he can stop this foolishness. We need more of our representatives to speak up for us including city and county. I was pleased to see that the Alderman in ward 1 took the time to voice her opinion at the public meeting. Where was the rest of the council and county? These rate increases not only affect our utility bill but also the city and county. And we all know how they recoup those monies to make the payments...... Yep, that's right.Us taxpayers.

Poastmaster....A little civics lesson for you.

The Assembly, Senate or Governor do not grant utility rate increases, the PSC does. Cahill and I am sure Bonacic, and Larkin did their job to voice the opinion of the people they represent to the PSC.

Civics Teacher:

The PSC is a puppet rubber stamp to grant the will of the evil utilitiy companies. Ms. Harris is the only commish not to take the money when offered.
