It's Official: Sottile Calls It Quits!!!!!

“I, Mayor James Sottile, will not be seeking re-election to another term of office next year,” he wrote. “I want to thank the citizens of Kingston for placing their trust in me as their leader. It has been a pleasure serving them and an experience that I will never forget.”

-Mayor James Sottile

I broke the story in JULY that Mayor Jim Sottile would not seek reelection and today he sent out a press release confirming his desire to get out of public life. I do hear that he WILL finish his term and not take a job with senate Republicans as expected but we will see, I hear he is not spending a lot of time at city hall these days. It's really early for him to announce his departure but I guess its a way to get people off his back and to have a quiet last year in office and his only hope to improve his dismal popularity and leave office on a high note. It's a smart move on his part.

July Story click here---

Now the race for Mayor begins, it's the first open seat for Mayor in my lifetime and it's going to be a very interesting race.

Democratic candidates rumored to have been considering a run:

Shayne Gallo - brother of the late T.R. Gallo, says he is in if Noble does not run

Jim Noble- says he is running for Alderman at large but I say he will for the top spot, he's been waiting for the last 4 yrs

David Donaldson- He is going to run but come on now...

Hayes Clement- He is playing coy in the paper but he is def in

Bill Reynolds---looking at his options

Nick Woerner- looking at his options

Mike Madsen-- rumored to be thinking it over

Republicans:

Rich Cahill - Running

Ron Polocco- Running

Andi Turco Levin-- good chance she is too!

WAY TO END 2010 WITH A BANG!

Cahill is quoted as saying he is "seriously considering" it.

Why are you reporting that he IS running?

On another note.... With all the weather upheaval across the globe. We should be looking at climate change a little more closely. Al Gore where are you?

Who cares what Republican runs? Unless there is a nasty DEM primary and the 2nd place loser stays on the ballot..circa the DA race...then GOP has ZERO chance.

The time now is to dissolve city government and let the county take over. We had a great Mayor once...there is no one up to the task of the list you provided. Sorry.

Who says wishing on 11:11 don't work? Best news I have heard all week.

Sottile has not been to city hall on a steady basis in like a month in a half, he is a disgrace.

Cut the Mayor some slack. He is clearing the way to allow someone else to run. He was good and bad, all elected officials are. But seriously Shane Gallo, his brother runied the City and now he wants to be Mayor? There was a reason why he was not appointed Judge the same reason why he will never be the Mayor!

So if the mayor is spending less time at City Hall, what is he doing to earn his salary?

"Mayor Shayne Gallo."

Forget the blizzard and the cold. It's those 3 words that should really send a shiver up your spine this morning -- at least if you're a Kingston homeowner or business person. Scary scary thought.

Run Shayne, run.
Boundless energy, a tireless campaigner, always entertaining, plenty of experience with labor law, city ordinances and the operations of city government. All that and he can run three phone banks all on his own. just think how much time that would leave for other democrats to make phone calls for the rest of the candidates.
Being a little nuts has never disqualified anyone before. The temperament that did not fit that of a Judge could work perfectly in city hall.
Besides, the idea of Shayne running a campaign against Cahill would be worth pre-ordering the buckets of popcorn.
and they're off . . .

Lately,I don't think the Mayor has even spent much time in the city of Kingston much less city hall. He seems to be heading off to vacation whenever there was a public event.Certain events happen on the same date for years and the Mayor is on vacation??? Do like some of us voters have to do. If we are working we cannot always take time off. Got to put in the time. Bottom line...He made a wise choice by not going for re-election.
By the way I thought I read that Polacco stated he was seriously considering running not Cahill but that Cahill was "thinking" of running?? I will take Polacco over Cahill anyday. If you want a real bulldog ,with no real people skills who can clean up the city, then Cahill is your guy. But Ron has a sense of rapport with fellow Kingstonians and might be the guy to smooth ruffled feathers of the Unions and still get the job done. A mayor should surround himself with qualified heads of the many departments(dem and republicans) and it is up to the Mayor to seek their advice for decisions that affect all. Why do you think the Presidents surround themselves with capable cabinet members?. One person cannot expect to know it all but have a grasp and a sense of intuitivenss of what is needed. Sottile depended too much on his high school buddies and thus seemed to be a more "social club" administration.

Shane Gallo is not the brightest man for the job. If he was, he would have his own law practice and would not consider running at all! LOL! Noble is not a very bright guy either, he is a freaking plumber for petes sake. Hayes Clement,Andi Turco- Levine are two people with some smarts that should be considered...

T.R. did not ruin this city, he has a great mayor, watch your fucking mouth cuz.

Anonymous said...

we miss you TR

Gallo, Turco- Levin, or Polacco would all be good nd have the city at heart. sottile I'm sure has a patronage job lined up in Albany and whats with Dener sticking his joint in this/ Still hoping for a job I guess

Anonymous said...

I'll take a bulldog who can clean up this city any day of the week.

If we elect an asshole who can cut our taxes, then I will vote for the asshole.

Maybe that could be Cahill's slogan -

"I'M AN ASSHOLE, BUT I CAN GET THE JOB DONE!!!"

Gallo watch: Jb- don't allow people to undermind our friend Shayne. Here is what I have already heard: Mark Halwick called Cardinale (where does that fucker get the nerve to call anyone) and was complaining Shayne announsed. Gallo owes the party nothing, he did us a solid last year and if he wants to run so be it. I don't care if he runs or not but I don't want Shayne to be stabbed in the back again. Halwick better watch himself or he can rest assured he will be blocked from the Ward 9 Alderman's race. (you know the ward Shayne lives in and his brother served in)

It is obvious that the people you are friends with want pollaco for two reasons. One Ball would win ward six in a walk. Two you would not have to face rich cahill the toughestm candidate the republicans have. ron will get his ass kicked by ball anyway so what differance? pollaco would get his ass kicked in a landslide if he runs for mayor and he won't be the nominee. the republicans aren't that dumb.

T.R. Gallo did start the ball rolling in the city's decline, that is a fact. He also chose a running mate, Jimbo Sottile, who than continued to slowly destroy kingston's economic and community development with bringing in low income housing and all the dysfunction that comes with that. Shane Gallo is a nice guy but is not the right choice. The unions would never support him and would start a campaign exposing his incompetence. ( Shane worked on CSEA and PBA payrolls in past and both got rid of him, he sucked.) New blood is needed to turn things around. Polacco could be a consideration. Turco-Levin has excellent ideas and should also be considered. Hayes Clement is a wolf in sheep's clothing and should not be trusted, plus he is awful light in his loafers. To be continued...

Where does Shayne actually live? I hear it's not actually Kingston.

The city of Kingston voters made a choice to restructure/ and reform the old corrupt form of goverment, it was on the ballot and passed by a large majority of the voters. It was the city manager form of goverment. Then the old guard politico went nuts and had it murdereed in the womb before it was even born. When Mayor Gallo was newly elected he made a full court press, from conrtact promisses to Police, Fire,CSEA and others to have it killed. I was at a League of Womens Voters where the Mayor attempted to intimadate the pannel into changing there positon for a City manager, and their oppositon to Gallo's ballot initiative to repeal the City manager, and have a 4year Mayor. I voted for the City Manager as Alderman, and when we had to form a Commission for charter revision, I as a commisioner, I voted to move the City manager onto the ballot. So boys and girls you now reap what you have sown.

Can Ball actually run for any political office in the City of Kingston with her husband as City court judge? Couldn't that potentially be a conflict of interest somewhere down the line?

Jeremy Blaber said...

253: I know for a fact Shayne is a resident of Kingston, he lives in Ward 9.

1059: What is the conflict? I dont see one..

7:36 AM: "light in his loafers"? Keep your homophobic comments to yourself - one's sexual orientation makes no difference how effective s/he will be. The fact that you would even mention it in this arena weakens your entire comment - no one can take what you said seriously. In the year 2011, it is amazing that there is still anyone around who thinks that that's a factor in one's ability to serve. You must be a Republican; no wonder you trashed all the Dems, praised the Reps, and invoked a homophobic slur.

Two words for Kingston:
JOSEPH MARCHETTI

also a loyal FRIEND ! said...

Hey 7:15 what's yr problem ?

Dener was asked a question & he answered it. period.
At least Butch Dener has the balls & intestinal fortitude to stand up for his friend. Can you understand the concept of friend ?
He doesn't need a job but if he did, they'd be lucky to have a smart & loyal guy like him, besides, he lived through a Liver Transplant, & is thriving.
Can any of you dickwads say that ???

Anonymous said...

Interesting the the Mayor's salary is $75,000 and he is responsible for 23,000 people. Maybe he would be interested in running the RRA!

Anonymous said...

Hey, Hey, Hey 5:33!! I am a republican and I resent your statement regarding the homophobic posting. You are generalizing and you can never rule out it might have been a moderate democrat making the inappropriate comment!!. I too agree that one's sexuality is not a criteria to be a good/bad mayor. As to conflict of interest, it always good to err on something that wouldn't raise an issue. So to remove one's self would end that speculation. That has always been a problem in the city of Kingston's political arenas.

12:24.. How many people can stand up and say they irresponsibly destroyed their liver with drugs and alcohol and still don't have the common sense to put the drugs down? I know one.

Anonymous said...

wow 8:53 nice compassionate comments

you have no idea what the true facts are - you are slandering Dener cause you dont like his politics or whatever -

There for the grace of god go you or anyone.

Count your blessings that you never had to fight a major illness & shut the f**k up, asshole,

you know NOT of what you speak,,

btw - he never drinks,, i have seen him @ political functions before & after his illness - no alchohol.
unless you have proof of the other, shut the f**k up.

Idiots inhabit Ulster County.

Anonymous said...

12:24 can you be more insensitive to people with serious illnesses ?

Former Ulster County Consumer Advocate, ( the Late ) Jonathan VanVlack died from HEP C & not getting a Liver Transplant & he never did drugs or drank alchohol !!!

He got his Liver Disease from a bad blood transfusion.

How do you know that this other guy didnt get his that way ?

wow - you people are a rough bunch.

Anonymous said...

Save your breath. The other guy was/is a notorious partier, and continues to do things that are not healthy. It is not a secret.

Anonymous said...

7:15

your proof is ???

Do YOU hang with him & do these alleged acts ?

Didn't think so,, where is your proof while you slander this guy ?

watta dick you must be in real life.

Pretty amazing the city is in such rough shape with so many KNOW-IT-ALLS living in the vicinity. I really like the logic our friends on the Righteous Reich use as all the things they are so against they quickly don't mind running up to sign up for. Whether they are collecting unemployment and bartending under the table, or spouting off about family values and then parading around and being seen with their married girlfriend or even having a liver transplant and instead of paying their medical bills with the money from a fundraiser that was held at the golf course, one simply uses the money to buy his now EX-WIFE some fake boobs. Then quickly dumping the cost of all medical bills and expense back on the taxpayers of NY, while screaming about "socialism" of course. I can only imagine what our heroic friends on the right did with their spare time before the inventing of the internet and blogging came along. OH wait, I know, they drank!
