Ulster Legislator Laura Petit Leaves GOP

Ulster County Legislator Laura Petit has left the Republican party and joined the Independence party. This is really no surprise, Legislator Petit is a very moderate and I dare say progressive legislator who does a great job. Ulster Republicans were only holding her back, although I do wish the distinguished legislator from Esopus would have joined the Working Families party. Democrats would be wise to endorse her candidacy next year.

Rather than have her caucus-free, the Democrats should finally bring her in. She's been the strongest advocate for open government, overshadowing some Democrats.
Her switch changes the make-up of the Legislature. If you count her move today, the county is 15-15-2-1. There are two Conservatives on the Legislature.
Facing a downsize to 23 heading into 2012, might this cause even more infighting in both caucuses? Could there be more infighting?

Why not be a NOP? She'd be beholding to no one.

Rumor has it that Joe Roberti, who has been attacking republicans on his Mojo blog is seriously considering switching his party affiliation.

Like the Democrats, there are many factions in the GOP as well.

The difference is that the GOP will cut each other's heads off and eat their own.

The Dems will yell at each other, but in the end, Dems will unite.

Republicans hold a grudge, forever - that is why Petit left.

The funny thing is how shocked some of them were.

Here's a clue GOP big shots - people do not have an endless appetite for your nasty politics.

Kudos to Laura Petit for standing up for herself, and for transparency in government.

sounds like she is more of a libertarian than an Independent.

Who the F is Robin Yess to say anything to Petit. Hasn't Yess changed parties? Last time I checked she was a Democrat... oops then she became a Republican.

Yeah Robin can't say jack, she sought the Democratic endorsement to run for county legislature in the same year and same district as Petit!!! Dems chose not to endorse her so she switched her party to GOP and the rest is history. Note to Republicans, your county chair has been a Republian just as long as Hein has been a Democrat..so stop being hypocritical.

Yess was a Conservative then a Dem before the genius Catalano went and recruited her to the Rep. Robertis loss would be a gain for the Rep since he is the town chair who takes over his daddy who runs it via Spada anyway. Then Jo-Jo can run his little empire in Saugerties. Then maybe he can get a woman that would believe he is really is a man

At least Laura Petit got herself elected as a Legislator, by the residents of Ulster County - twice. That's more than you can say for Yess who lost to Petit for Legislator. Then got crushed - no, not crushed, annihilated by Kevin Cahill for Assembly. I think Yess holds the record for the worst spanking by Kevin Cahill ever. She got spanked worse than Noonan. A fact that Noonan still gloats over.

She ascended to Chair of the County Republican Party unopposed - Wow, a small group of Republicans who couldn't find anyone else to do an unpaid, thankless job "elected" the unopposed Yess.

Republicans have elevated a person to be their leader who was first a Conservative, then a Democrat, and now a Republican. What's next after she burns all of her bridges in the Republican Party? The Indepedence Party or Green Party?

And the Republicans bitched that Steve Levy "wasn't" a Republican? I guess it really is all in the timing.

Miss ME yet?

I'm sure that Chairwoman Yess will bring the same "I know better than you " attitude to the County Committee, that she had during her failed Assembly race. She didn't make any friends with the folks from RACC during that race.

How about Petit for Chairwoman of the Legislature? She has bigger balls than anyone in the Legislature for standing up for herself. Wadnola is a lame duck anyway.

All I can say is stay tuned, more to follow. This is without a doubt, the most dysfunctional legislature of any that I can remember. When the leadership is not respected on either side of the aisle, the executive is running roughshod over them, the public thinks they are worthless and a waste of money, it is time to regroup and start from scratch.

this Legislature has done nothing regardless of who is in charge and what party they belong to. This is not news. They seem to be best at not giving oversight where they are required too. Hein does whatever he wants and they seem to be able to do nothing or don't want to do anything....So who cares what party she is in. The only thing positive about them is that they have been relatively entertaining at times...ie..Rodriguez and Zimet. Whoever said the Dems will unite clearly must live in some other county....it seems like they all hate each other.

Yes, Pete I do miss you. Catalano was out of his league. I heard a story once that Savago out smarted Catalano at the GOP convention, got all his proxy's to vote for anyone Catalano was supporting. The henchmen Savago sent was great and had to listen to Catalano curse at him and poor Robin Yess was sitting there as the good right hand doing everything Catalano told her to do.

She would be a great County Executive.

Than Catalano threatened to take me to court --ooh was I scared at Dracula breathing down my neck. We beat him at his own game. Mario potty mouth Catalano and Robin (like batman and Robin hehehe)should stick to their local county elections and stay outaa state biz. Or Mario, your candidates won't get any lawn signs put up baahahahaa. Two words: light weights.

Laura P has her own agenda. She was fired from the RRA a few yrs ago by Bemis. She worked hard at payback. She has this opinion, as Zimit, Bernardo have, "Look at how great I am--I'm the greatest thing". Pleasseeeeeeeeeeeee

2:04, lawn signs don't win elections

1:06 - proxy voting at a county convention? Unless it specifically states that that's acceptable in their by-laws, then according to Robert's Rules of Order, proxy voting is not allowed:

A "proxy" is a means by which a member who expects to be absent from a meeting authorizes someone else to act in his or her place at the meeting. Proxy voting is not permitted in ordinary deliberative assemblies unless federal, state or other laws applicable to the society require it, or the bylaws of the organization authorize it, since proxy voting is incompatible with the essential characteristics of a deliberative assembly. As a consequence, the answers to any questions concerning the correct use of proxies, the extent of the power conferred by a proxy, the duration, revocability, or transferability of proxies, and so forth, must be found in the provisions of the law or bylaws which require or authorize their use.

The Dems don't allow proxy voting - the Reps shouldn't, either.

3:31, He's not talking about the County Convention, he's talking about the New York State Republican Convention, and yes, proxy voting is allowed.

3:31,your right. The story I herd was that Savago sandbagged Catalano at the Republican state convention. He and one of his cronys from Kingston gave there proxys to Lazio. Catalano was supporting Levy, the turncoat Republican. In the end, Cayalano had last laugh as Lazio lost Ulster County 4 to 1. Morale of story: Savago still a scumbag.
