Outgoing Mayor Jim Sottile gets a thumbs up on his job performance according to a recent poll on the blog. 53% say they approve of hiz honor's job performance. The poll is not scientific of course, with the Mayor's actual numbers probably in the mid 20's or so.

Sottile inherited a mess. Gallo may he rest in peace didn't live long enough to suffer from his mistakes and lack of financial planning for the future. Gallo was a here and now people person and I liked him a lot, but he put no thought in to the long term of where his policies would bring the city of Kingston. He gave us great facilities and no tax increases, but didn't have a plan to pay for them in the long run.
By in large Sottile I think did a decent job with what he inherited. He has taken the hit for the projects that he had to do, but in the long run he fell on the sword for future mayors. Now Sottile's problem is his mouth, hot-headedness, and at times ignorance. Take the good and take the bad and Sottile did ok. At least he didn't bond for slush fund money like the Ulster Town Board did.
What you don't get Gallo had a plan, he died in the middle of his tenure as Mayor and Sottile (who is not as smart as Gallo) was just in over his head and blamed T.R. for our financial woes. Gallo was a fine mayor and anyone that says anything different just is listining to the facts according to James M. Sottile.
Sottile should recognize that if not for T.R. he would never of held elective office.
100% of those 53% peobabally were at the New Year's Eve bash on O'neill Street ;)
That's right Gallo had a plan. Spend all the money on cool feel good projects, don't raise taxes and don't worry about the infrastructure. Yeah, that would have worked. Gallo was a great mayor in the present tense and a hell of nice guy. But he would not have gotten away with running the things the way he was for much longer. The city was crumbling below our feet and some day the bill was going to come due, then people would have turned on him too. Only difference he would have had a little more tact than Sottile.
Oh BS to your poll.. Everyone in Kingston is ready to run Sottile out on a rail!!
Bogus poll. Even Sottile saw the handwriting on the wall. Another good thing is when he leaves there is no longer a reason to leave some dept. heads in place.Good time to clean house. Get your resumes ready, people.
In general I do agree w/annon934am. He may have fell on the sword for any future mayor for the City of Kingston, as it concerns the waste water and sewer lines in the city. But I think he took actions that other in charge put off for decades.
I do not agree that Sottile's problem is his mouth, hot-headedness, and at times ignorance.
In my humble opinion, Mayor Sottile is a very caring person who really cares about the City of Kingston.

I didn't mean that those were his problems all of the time. I do think he cares. But you have to admit that it has been his mouth and hot headedness that at times has gotten him into unnecessary trouble.
Often times the effects of leadership are not obvious other than from a historical perspective.Mayor Sottile has been proven correct on many issues. His position on infrastructure repair, the uptown parking garage and condos, his rectification and downsizing of D.P.W.with no apparent effects on service other than positive witness the last snowstorm cleanup, his constant struggles with entrenched union positions on behalf of the taxpayer, his facilitation of development of downtown and river condos, the constant decrease in crime, the ability of all departments to function with less with no decline or disruption in service. The expectation that a mayor can bring industry to an area is absurd;about as absurd as as the position that new educational facilities on the district level will do so. The mayor is premature in his position not to run.He has begun a struggle that we hope others can resume.
Read the blog posts at www.yuku.com ulsterpublishingmessageboards under "Black Knight"(Sottile) and then conclude that he has no problem in his "mouth"(or perhaps typing fingers) or thoughts.
He apparently has lots of jealousy issues with me personally which I flushed out of him. Unfortunately that is a trait we have seen too often in him and other ones in similar positions.
Even I agree many of his policies have been correct--the CVS uptown, the parking garage condo project, and others. He most certainly inherited a total mess with the sewers. But the mark of a good leader is not to crumble under pressure and become vicious--which is what Sottile most certainly has done("Hotheaded" it is referred to on here--how about a "short fuse"--would that describe it? And "Bigoted, discriminatory, and just plain rude"? I would say so. The sex harrassment in DPW describes a couple of those, and certainly his blog posts describe a lot of it. He has only himself to blame for revealing himself in that way.
To suggest he somehow has enough experience to understand how and where to proceed from here--thus he should run again--I think is "a stretch." He has neither the people-person skills nor the intelligence nor the desire to go the distance. He has exhibited sufficient retaliatory behaviors(and even direct threats--read the blog posts!)--and that is not really anything that ought to prompt "hip hip hoorays." His service in positive ways will stand for what it is, but with it comes some clearcut negatives as well--and the so-called "downsizing" of DPW with no apparent effects on service" I would call laughable--if one withdraws garbage pickup from all nonprofits--that's a definite effect on service--and one that I credit the Sottile-Gorsline "team" with fostering as a vicious direct attack on me--which Sottile admits on the blog references--go ahead and read those anyone who wants to LEARN what has really been in Sottile's BRAIN and how he has REALLY approached things--"SAD but TRUE."
