Ghetto Guerin Mulls Run for Kingston Mayor

Former Assemblyman John Guerin
John Guerin announced yesterday if the stars "align for him", he will run for Kingston Mayor. Mr. Guerin is a shroud guy, bright, charismatic, a little arrogant but well respected in Republican circles. His candidacy would give the Republican party a real shot at winning back the mayor's office.
In my humble opinion, I don't see Mr.Guerin running at the end of the day, his name is always thrown around as running for office, and the final result is always someone saying: John (a very wealthy Kingston businessman) just won't take the pay cut. This candidacy is brought on by Guerin wanting a little attention and giving himself an opportunity to test the waters for the office he really wants to run for, Ulster county executive.
While I think the town of Ulster resident won't run, his candidacy would be interesting. Certainly if he runs it looks like he has a clear path to the nomination, Kingston Republicans thinking of running now, know that if Guerin is in, they are pretty much out. Guerin is known to be outspoken, almost to Carl Palidino levels, right off the gate, Guerin is in the paper talking about how Midtown Kingston is one big ghetto. I am sure there are plenty of more of those great inspirational quotes to come if Guerin runs, stay tuned.

I think that Guerin's eyes are much more piercing than Hein's

We will have to have a fundraiser to buy many potted plants for Mr. Guerin to hide behind if, by an snowballs chance in hell he ever got elected, much like the plants he hid behind when he was in the Legislative Chamber or at UC Chamber Breakfasts ;)

I mean don't get me wrong.. I like the guy...but.. Leo Durocher coined the phrase, "Nice Guys Finish Last"...

Guerin will never run. He will not win and he knows it. He is not running for Sergeant at Arms at Wyltwick. However, he may be able to find a position in the Hein administration, I am sure they are golfing buddies.

Just another rich guy who has no clue what it is like to struggle.

He does not care about Kingston. He cares about his wallet and his business. Anyone who truly cared would never refer to a partially socioeconomic challenged neighborhood as a ghetto.

There are hundreds of people living there who keep nice homes, take care of their property, pay their taxes, and have respect for their environment and community. They volunteer, support the community, and give back which is more than I can say for Guerin.

We don't need elitist neo-cons like Guerin running Kingston. Stay out in Ulster with your rich friend Quigley.

Are you saying it is not a ghetto? Have you walked through there lately...?

"partially socioeconomic challenged neighborhood"? Wow. Paging Dr. Orwell.

Despite a string of Democrat mayors and nothing getting any better, Kingston will elect another Democrat mayor ... and nothing will change.

The sooner people admit it is a ghetto and stop trying to hide from it by throwing out this social BS the quicker things will start to get fixed. There are a lot of hardworking people that live in midtown. They keep very nice houses and apartments, they try to guide their children as best they can. And most of them will be the first to agree that it is a ghetto.

So let's stop throwing out the class and race cards and let's start fighting to take back our neighborhoods from the scum of the earth that are dragging them down. It is time to make them unwelcome through tighter enforcement of Social Services policies, criminal law and building codes. Start hitting these people and don't stop until they leave. Heartless??? Maybe, but I would rather harass some drug dealers, some lazy dirtbags screwing decent landlords, or some scum scamming the system then to allow them to corrupt and hurt the decent people (and children) of this community.

5:06 - you're mostly right on target - but what about the slumlords? The Building Department, under the auspices of the KFD, needs to work! The block-by-block effort was a waste (or maybe they would've found the illegal nightclub). If the Building Department didn't allow the properties to fall into disrepair, then the landlords wouldn't be so quick to buy property and rent to anyone. But since the landlords get away with anything and everything, it doesn't matter to them what their place looks like and who they rent to.

5:06. Very well put.!!! My words exactly. We have to stop the mentality of building low income housing all of the time. (If you build it, they WILL come) Let's help the middleclass for a change. After all, they are the working men & women who supports these handouts with their taxes. Goodbye entitlements. Get rid of the PC & BS mentality and call it what it is. Guerin could really shake it up.

I would gladly support Guerin for Mayor, and I do believe that he is right when he calls mid town a ghetto. It is the truth, and as much as it hurts, it is better than the spin the Sottile administration puts on it by saying "crime is down". I do not belong to any political party, but I vote every year and i will not vote for any candidate that is coming from the current administration. Mr. Guerin will get my vote if he runs.

The only way a Republican could be Mayor is if Vince Bradley Jr. runs for Mayor, loses the primary, but stays on the ballot like he screwed up the DA's race. Even the best qualified GOP candidate will have a hard time breaking into the low 40%s in a city-wide race. Rev. Guerin would have an easier time moving down off of Homily Hill into the nearby 3rd Ward, where I believe he could give Mr. Crankypants Landi a good run for the Alderman seat. Landi has been burning bridges lately and will soon be celebrating his 117th Birthday, so his time might be up.

As for midtown qualifying as a Ghetto. Maybe. But what do we consider the recent influx of LATINOS into the "Ghetto Zone"?
The latinos work. They improve their neighborhoods. They are developing new businesses in midtown. I see signs of Hope. Yet, you won't see me walking down Furnace Street at 1AM, alone with a fat wallet in my pocket and no 'gat' strapped to my waist anytime soon!!!

Guerin is qualified to be Mayor. He's a better candidate than Richy-Rich Cahill Jr, but I'd pick Noble or Reynolds ahead of either of them. Whoever is the next mayor will not have an easy job. Once their honeymoon wears off, it will be 4 hard years.

6:51, I agree with you. That is why I said enforcement of building codes. Slum lords are just as guilty as the drug dealers for midtown's blight. A matter of fact that is where most of the drug dealers live.

All low income housing is, is a way for people to dictate where the poor can live. Usually not in their neighborhood. There should be no such thing as low income housing. The market will figure it out. That is why you can rent a 3 bedroom house for close to the price of a two bedroom apartment right now.

Love the poster who trashes the city, and then would vote for Reynolds or Noble. Arent those two assholes part of the problem. If they had any solutions wouldnt we have seen them by now. Answwer is that these tow do-nothings havent had an original idea between them in the last 20 years. I say give Guerin a chance to put up or shut up. He grew up in the city, owns a business in the city, and why not give him a shot at cleaning up the mess?

This arrogant, know it all prick is like little dick cahill on steroids.

Kingston needs him like it needs 20 more firefighters and 5 more alderman.

Jeremy Blaber said...

Yes 1157, I am saying midtown Kingston is not one big ghetto.

Rod Stiffington said...

3:55.. It was a comparison. I'm not a fan of the majority leader or the alderman at large. If you want solutions, the first thing to do is merge the city with the town of ulster and the first thing you will achieve is a more favorable political balance, because the way it is now, you can eat a big Mexican Dinner and when you poop it out, scoop it out of the bowl, nominate it to run for Mayor, enroll it as a Democrat, and it will win. Essentially, that is what we have now as our Mayor. My point is that Guerin is a nice fella, but he wasn't an effective politician because he really is too ethical. ( And was an (R) in Shelly's (D)) To be a politician, by defenition, it to be corrupt. We can whine all we want about how we want our politicians to be ethical and 99+44/100% pure as Ivory Snow... Sorry, the best politicians are the ones who make the proverbial trains run on time. I don't give a flying J who that is, polotically speaking, but it's beein a long time...TR Gallo... Frank Koeing... since K-Town has had a Mayor who can accomplish what we need. In the time that has passed, the city has fallen several notches...That's the best we can say about the city these days... Here's a slogan... "KINGSTON...We're not Newburgh...YET.."

We will fight you on the Esopus, we will fight you on the beaches,we will fight you on our golf courses, we will resist you to our fullest messure at our malls, and fly the flag of Rightous Freedom before we give one inch of our Land,Water, Air, or Flood plains to a merger with Kingston.
Mr.Stiffington we dont need your water, sewars, roads, police, fire department,DPW, and(most deffinatly) your lame and self serving poloticans,WE HAVE OUR OWN.
Its allways sunny in the T/U

Anonymous said...

It is sunny in the Town of Ulster.

The water and sewer works, our DPW actually works with a purpose, our police dept is efficient, and our fire depts. provide the same service as Kingston's for a quarter of the price and even comes into the city on a daily basis to help them do theirs. And best of all we got rid of our reject from the politician factory that didn't even understand how to write a bond, and his little lawyer too. Yep, it is pretty damn sunny

Anonymous said...

12:38, If you think a 39% sewer tax increase is sunny, you are nuts!

Merging the city with the Town will have more positive effects than negative. Also, the county legislature should revert back to a board of supervisors with already elected officials from the towns meeting once a month to provide oversight for the Executive and passing laws at the county level. I applaud the recent merger of the 2 Saugerties PD's. We need more merging with those regards. I've seen some proposals of having the County and the towns share some of the DPW duties. Our new Gubbner has made some excellent points regarding the excess of governing bodies in NY. All of this needs to be on the table for the future. We can't afford all of this bloated government anymore.

Merge the city and the Town. Fat Chance. Why? So the Town Residents can pay for years of the City of Kingston's waste and mismanagement? Everything in the Town is cheaper plus as an extra added bonus the Town doesn't have a crumbling infrastructure and employees that stumble through the streets picking up garbage cans at the pace of my dead grandmother. So why would the Town of Ulster want anything to do with the City of Kingston? Sound like a great way for the city of Kingston to get other people to pay for their mistakes, like NYC getting upstate to pay for the MTA.

Anonymous said...

8:31 Infrastructure? A small percentage of residents of the town have water service, less have sewer service. Kingston 100% water and 100% sewer.
Ulster does not have garbage collection or paid fire protection at all.

The taxes paid for these sometimes privately owned systems is exorbitant and even usurious in some cases.

Merging is not a good idea, but not for the lame, ill informed reasons you gave.

Anonymous said...

I wouldn't say 100% water and sewer in Kingston. Depends on the day doesn't it?

Why would the town want paid fire protection, the Town's fire budget is a quarter of the city's for the same number of calls if you were to take out the inflated bullshit calls that the city goes to.

Same with trash collection, I bet my private hauler costs less than a town wide service. It certainly goes faster. The only place you got me is water which does cost town residents more.

Anonymous said...

Do you think that the Ulster Water district is perfect? I would bet that the Ulster district has more pipe breaks than Kingston by a wide margin.
As far as Sewer... the small percentage of residents that have it, are using a system that is about 30 - 35 years old vs. 100+ years.

The Ulster Fire district taxes went up around 25 % too. Don't care what the base is, when you are raising taxes at that rate, someone is not minding the store.

Anonymous said...

9:58,

Only one of the Ulster Fire Districts went up by a wide margin, and as far as I know that was as a result of combining their separate awards program tax into one tax rather than two. Which is why the other tax in that district went down by 100%. Read the budget.

The other fire districts in the town stayed about the same or went down a little bit. Go figure, taxes going down.

As for the water district. I don't think they are perfect and you can bet all you want, but if there are more leaks they do a lot better job than the city at hiding them.
