Union Boss says Cahill's the candidate, to the surprise of some PAC members who say : When was the vote?

On Richard Cahill's show, The Kingston Chronicles , CSEA President Bart Robins announced that Mr. Cahill did in fact receive the endorsement from the CSEA .....this lead to disgruntled callers and to questions on whether or not the endorsement was legitimate or if Mr. Robin's was jumping the gun in announcing the union's support.

Brian Woltman, who has served on CSEA's PAC committee for many years called and blasted the Union Boss for announcing the Union endorsement before the committee had taken a formal vote. Mr. Woltman stated at the last meeting the vote was tabled for further discussion. Woltman also complained that it was inappropriate of Bart Robins to announce the vote before the formal announcement which takes place in August via an ad in the Daily Freeman.

Jeremy Blaber also called in and brought up the fact that Mr. Cahill was not very union friendly by calling for a hiring freeze and told Mr. Robin's that Mr. Cahill is just trying to capitalize on the situation between the Mayor and the union. Blaber also pointed out how good Mayor Sottile has been to the union and mentioned how it would of been easier for Mayor Sottile to silence his critics( Cahill included) by laying people off to lower taxes...but has never done so. Blaber went on record saying that supporting Rich Cahill was a mistake that CSEA would ultimately regret if Cahill was elected. Blaber said that he felt it was a slap in the face for Mr. Robins to go on Mayor Sottile's opponents tv show and announce such support, saying respect must go both ways.

What now? It is clear that the relationship between the Mayor and union leadership has hit it's boiling point, it certainly is not one sided, after what transpired tonight the union claiming to be a victim of an angry Jim Sottile, is simply untrue. It's also apparent that tension between the Union and the Mayor is with the leadership and not with rank and file members. Richard Cahill's motives to get Robins to go on the show and announce his endorsement was clearly well thought out, an attempt to try escalate the already rocky the relationship between the union leadership and the Mayor. Bart Robins was being pulled in by Mr.Cahill's plan, hook, line and sinker. Sottile on the other hand is too focused on running the city and Kingston's future to pay any attention.

Like I said on tv tonight, Mr. Cahill saw an opportunity and exploited it, no disrespect to Bart Robins who is a good man and someone that I have a great deal of respect for. It is clear that Mr. Robins does not like Sottile, by his own admission, Cahill is someone that is promising the world and the very fact that he's not Sottile is very attractive to Robins. However, in the end Cahill if elected, god forbid, will have promised CSEA the world and will have delivered nothing. Sottile no matter what will stick to his principals and do the right thing for CSEA...with or without the support of union leadership..that's just the type of guy he is.

Here is a classic case of the tail wagging the dog. It is about time for the City to once again gain control of its employees. The employee who acted is such defiance should be summarialy fired for insubordination and failure to follow orders.

It's no big deal...there isn't SH*&T on TV anyway ;)

Hopefully they will settle the matter and peace and harmony will once again reign. I think you are right, Jeremy to choose your battles and not to wade in on every conflict that pops up. I think in this case, it's a mater between the Mayor and the Union Bosses. It makes no sense to wade in an alienate one or both by choosing sides.

That's true, there is not shit on television, especially since they kicked my boy Blaber off!

This is exactly why our government on all leverls is in so much trouble. There are very few leaders with the courage and ability to lead. In private industry if an employee defied the specific instructions of the boss he/she would be history. No if ands or buts. City of Kingston... Take a lesson from private industry. Fire the culprit

JoeyB said...

Allow them to have as big a tv they want, but only allow Kingston Local Access channel (23). :-)

If a department supports Sottile, they get to keep their TV - only those who don't endorse Sottile get "punished" and harassed during their lunch hour. It's the only way the mayor knows how to deal with people who don't agree with him.

Joeyb......You talk to much. Go to the 'Basement' and sip your warm beer.

Anonymous said...

No one brought in a bigger TV - there is still no TV there. Whoever told that to Jeremy is a troublemaker.

Anonymous said...

What is clear to me is that there is NO citywide policy, drafted by the Mayor and passed by the CC regarding this matter. There are TV's all over the place in various city buildings. If one TV is pulled ALL should be pulled. ....but why should we expect to see such a policy? Heck, there still is NO City Vehicle polcy on the books - except for not having Bradley bumper stickers on vehicles.

Its time that the City get a Mayor who can work with its Department Heads properly and do away with its Micro-City-Manager. We don't need a Mayor who is also doubles as a "Lunch Room Monitor".

I called City Hall and was informed that no television has been put in the building in question. Check your sources, Jeremy.

Anonymous said...

So, if the CSEA had supported Sottile, then the TV was OK. If not, then they have to be punished. If you donate to his campaign, no parking meters in front of your place. No comment from Jeremy, just that Cahill is the bad guy for pointing out the quid pro quo. How is he the bad guy? He's not the candidate showing favoritism based on support and money, is he? Jeremy, you have aspirations of running for public office, but I think your expertise is in being Karl Rove, the spinmeister. Don't support an asinine war, you're the traitor and unpatriotic. Don't support quid pro quo, you're the political hack?

Shawn (Formisano Live) Mon 10:30pm KPA#23 said...

Those endorsements aren't what they used to be....take for example your endorsement for school board, Jeremy.

Years ago, Union Members voted lock-step with their endorsements. I don't think that is nearly the case anymore.

Politics aside, Jeremy, supporting a man who has shown to bully people is an unwise choice. Sottile is a flawed man....like many humans. He is not worthy of your gushing support.

The Mayor is pro-union? If so he would follow the proper protocol in disputes with union members. Threatening and yelling at workers is not proper - anywhere- especially with union workers.

Sottile has shown himself to be irrational, irresponsible and erratic, in public, in the press and in private when he is opposed, disagreed with or drunk.

Average citizens, without political power or lots of money stand little chance in this City to get a fair shake. Case in point, meters in front of residence on Fair, while one block on John Street is without meters. No meters because Win Morrison didn't want them in front of his office, if the rumors are true. A regular citizen has her house sprayed with graffitti and the City threatens her with $150 fine if she doesn't clean it up, while a member of the Police Commission has graffitti on the side of his office for longer than 4 months, as well as a van without plates in the parking lot. I believe this is the tip of the iceberg. Rumor is that the Mayor is protecting others from many things. He is not serving the average citizen.

Equity among City workers should be the rule and the law. Calling DPW workers lazy is counter productive, harrassing them is damn stupid. Again, those with the least are subject to his contempt, neglect and intimidation. Just like Midtown was for years, suddenly Sottile cares? Right before the election?

I hope CSEA follows through on its legal action against Sottile. For themselves and for the average citizen, who is without recourse until election day.

Richard T. Cahill Jr. said...

I made no deals with the CSEA, Jeremy. In fact, I only promised 2 things: (1) I will follow the contract to the best of my ability; and, (2) I will treat the CSEA members with respect. This is all the CSEA wants: respect. That's all I promised.

JoeyB said...

Jeremy, who is exploiting now? You sure seem to know what is good for the union. Sottile has already indicated, that he DOES NOT CARE whether or not he gets the union endorsement. So, why do you care?

Fact is, Cahill plans on running an economically sound city. Sound economics MEANS good union jobs. Soon, Sottile's plan is going to run dry, after the residents move out, leaving a welfare and illegal immigration sanctuary city, where no taxes can be collected.

One thing Labor should ALWAYS remember is that Republicans are not their friends. "Respected" sure, why not, that costs nothing! But you can bet your bottom dollar if Cahill wins, the CSEA will bear the brunt of what is "wrong" with Kingston as will the KPD. Republicans are inherently against organized labor. The CSEA is in a no win situation here. Sottile despises their leadership, and Cahill is going to gladly take the endorsement and any vote he can get from it. These are free, extra votes for a Republican. He is not stupid! When it comes to contract time, the CSEA is screwed no matter what. The CSEA leadership should be faulted for not recognizing this very predictable outcome.

Jeremy, you claim that Mr. Sottile is too focused on running the City to pay attention. Why then did he spend time writing letters questioning certain people's campaign contributions? On WMAC, three or so were mentioned. I know for a fact that he wrote and sent one. I've read the letter. In this letter, he questioned Matthew Ryan's integrity, sincerity and loyalty to the Democratic Party because of a rather small campaign contribution to the Cahill-Walker campaign. I find this puzzling and hypocritical on Sottile's part.

Does he question Mr. Bradley's integrity and sincerity? Mr. Bradley has accepted the Independent and Conservative Party endorsement. He certainly didn't turn down Mr. Spada's support. I personally find cross-endorsement refreshing and an indication of openness to bipartisan government. Mr. Sottile does not - except for his friends.

Is he aware that he publicly endorsed Governor Pataki, for re-election? A Republican if there ever was one. Is it possible Mr. Sottile forgot that? Or does he believe, we the voters have? By his own hand, he calls his integrity, his sincerity and his loyality into question as well.

"I am concerned that Mr. Ryan continues to take actions that contradict his campaign promises." Sottile's words. I never heard Mr. Ryan say he would refuse to work with anyone because they disagree with him or belonged to a diiferent political party. Mr. Walker is still a Democrat as Mr. Senor is still a Republican. And well, Mr. Bradley is still unaffiliated.

How petty and childish will he get before this election is over?

I watched the show and heard the calls and your synopsis of them is completely off base. In fact I think I recall Mr. Robins putting you in your place with information you were not ready to respond to. At any rate, isn't the mayor the one who announced to the media he was not getting the endorsement long before Cahill or the union announced that Cahill was getting it. If he announces he isn't getting it then why is a even an issue that Cahill says he is? You really need to get your facts straight. You are doing mroe harm than good to the Mayor making issues out of something that isn't. But maybe that is your goal. everyone knows that the Mayor is in heated negotiations with the union and they are upset about it, hence no endorsement. So what?

...sounds like someone is getting nervous about potential KFD layoffs...awww, they won't get paid $60,000 a year to sit around and watch TV. When was the last structure fire in the city? With new building codes and smoke alarms, we don't need as many firemen as we have. They have unlimited overtime, and they're given way too much play. The Democrats in the city are so scared of them - they think they can't win an election without them. Lenny Walker is definitely on to something. They consolidated the fire department with the building department so now the city has two useless departments sitting around doing nothing, and since the fire department had nothing else to do, they run to every medical emergency in the city. We can do with either a volunteer force or fewer paid firemen. And, to try to scare the voters with "public safety layoffs" isn't going to fly. If the fire/building department did its job, then maybe the Broadmor wouldn't have gotten so run down that it had to be condemned with people living in deplorable conditions.

I do know Matt well. Have since he moved here. He and I don't agree on everything. I don't know anyone in or out of politics I agree with completely. I don't expect to. I know much about the measure of this man. I know he can't be bought or pressured or intimidated. I know he has vision, tremendous energy and the ability to bring people of diverse backgrounds together to work on common goals. I know him to be honest, hard-working and committed to the betterment of this Ward and the City as a whole. Matt was asked to run by many of my neighbors. He didn't go looking for this. I warned him about the petty personal attacks he would face if he agreed to run.

Matt will have to deal with me day in and day out. He knows I can't be bought or pressured or intimidated. I warned him about that as well. Still he chose to run. He is a brave man.

I'm not trying to change closed minds. I believe there are a lot of people who have real questions and concerns about this City's future. If they're reading this blog, then they may want to hear a different point of view. I have as much right as anyone else.

As far as cutting Fire Dept. jobs, I DO NOT support that. Nor do I believe it will happen. I've had this same discussion with many people over the years, who believe that FD jobs should go to pay for additional police. As I said before, I don't expect to agree with everything from anyone.
Amy Murphy

I think it is fair to ask Matt Ryan and Shirley Whitlock whether they agree with Walker's plan regarding the Fire Department.

Rich Cahill answered that question right away. He disagrees with Lenny. Now, all the other candidates need to answer it. It is a very fair and relevant question.

Talk about the effectiveness of our fire deptaertment. Every minor fire turns into a major fire. Black Lion Inn, Jensen Deegan Funeral Home, Broadway and West Chester Street and on and on. All to the ground.

Run off all the volunteers in the City and when they get in trouble they have to call the Pride of the Avenue Ulster Hose.

They have had too good too long.

If you are really concerned about good government you should ALWAYS vote AGAINST any candidate who has the Union endorsement. Their endorsement means that they vote to give away the farm to the union and its employees. Good leadership does NOT mean anti union. It simply means that they are experts in running a business and negotiating with the union is part of that job. The unions hire the best of the best negotiators where we have countyr bumpkins in government negotiating with them. The union should never like the Supervisor or Mayor. Their goals should be different and they must come to some common ground someplace. A politician endorsed by the union is bought and paid for.... AVOID them at any cost... Democrat, Republican, Independent or Conservative. The only way to hold taxes down is to stopn the spread of government.

TO 4:20 You tell me why there are no meters on John Street between Green and Wall. The only place Uptown without meters!!! Word on the street is that the Mayor did a favor for Win Morrison, the only major player on that stretch. Win is a major Sottile supporter and has contributed to the Mayor's re-election.

I have spoken with business people and people who work Uptown who believe that the Mayor did this favor for poitical reasons. Sure looks that he was bought. Meters at Academy Green, that are rarely used, meters on residential areas of Fair, where they don't belong. Yet 20 parking spaces on John- always full- have no meters. That is $4 per space per day. $80/day; $400/week (Sat not included), $20,000/year not including parking fines for expired meters. This while we pay for the meters along Academy Green that are not paying for themselves.

FYI - there are meters on John between Wall and Clinton; meters on Green, Crown and Fair. An oversight? An oversight that has not been remedied as of today. Doesn't look that way to me. Makes me wonder what else is being given away or ignored.

8:24 really? What exactly was that response?

Anonymous said...

7:56 I listened carefully when Walker discussed this issue. I particularily remember it because he repeatedly said, "am-buuu-lants"
Walker suggested that Kingston purchase ambulances and the emts from the fire fighters be designated the only ambulance to respond to routine calls, since they respond first anyway. He also suggested that the fire dept ambulances could then bill the clients, as private ambulances do. This would then make the program self-funding. As it presently stands, the fire company responds, using manhours and putting wear & tear on the equipment with no recompence.
